How many MB are in a GB

When shopping for a wireless plan, minutes and text messages are pretty self-explanatory, but many people still don’t fully understand how data is measured. You may see a 500MB plan versus a 10GB plan and wonder, how many MB are in a GB? MB, short for megabyte, and GB, short for gigabyte, are units we use to measure data size as well as data usage. Understanding the conversion rate, as well as how everyday wireless activities use varying amounts of data, can help you decide how much data you need, so you don’t pay for more than you’ll use or run out faster than anticipated.

What is a megabyte?
A megabyte is a digital unit for measuring data, most often used for lower data usage activities like sending photos or browsing websites. A MB consists of 1,024 KB, or kilobytes. Doing things like sending a photo to someone, posting a text-only update on social media or browsing a simple webpage on your phone tend to use a few MB each time. But if you’re on your phone a lot, you can understand how MB usage can add up.
What is a gigabyte?
A megabyte is also a digital unit for measuring data that consists of 1,024 MB. So, gigabytes are used to measure heavier data usage activities, like streaming music & video, downloading apps or gaming. Most wireless data plans are measured in GB, although some carriers still offer plans as low as 500MB or even plans with no data at all. Knowing how often you plan to stream, game or do other data-heavy activities over the mobile network is the key to knowing how much data you’re going to need every month.

What is a byte?
A byte is the smallest digital unit commonly used to measure data. Each byte consists of 8 “bits,” which are the tiniest pieces of digital information, representing a single binary unit of information (either a 0 or a 1). Bytes are used to measure the sizes of all things digital (apps, photos, videos, messages, etc) but since they’re so small, we most often measure data in KB, MB and GB.

How much data is 1GB?
Depending on your data usage, 1GB can be plenty… or barely enough. The more advanced the activity or the higher quality of the content you’re consuming can significantly increase your data usage. Here are some examples:
| Activity | Approx. MB used | How much 1GB would allow |
| Streaming Standard Definition (1HR) | 300 MB | ≈3.5 hours |
| Streaming HD (1 HR) | 700-900MB | ≈1-1.5 hours |
| Streaming Standard Quality Music (1HR) | 50MB | ≈20 hours |
| Browsing the Web (1HR) | 40-60MB | ≈17-25 hours |
| Scrolling Instagram (30 min) | 100-150MB | ≈3-5 sessions |
| Watching TikTok (30 min) | 200-300MB | ≈3-4 sessions |
Why this matters for Your Phone plan
So why is it so important to know the difference between data measurements and data usage? For one, it’s very helpful when it comes to saving money. Knowing how much data you need can help you choose the right wireless plan from the beginning, so you have less chance of running out and having to purchase data add-ons or upgrade your plan later. It may also help you manage your data more efficiently, so that you can choose a lower data plan to save money.
