Anyone who’s made an international call knows there’s a lot to keep track of. Besides dialing the correct phone number, you’ll need to know the exact country code and international calling code for your call to find its destination. If this sounds complicated, let us change your mind! We’ve put together this complete guide to help you understand how international calling works, so you can effortlessly keep in touch with your loved ones abroad.
What are International Calling Codes?
Also known as the exit code, the international calling code refers to the sequence of numbers that indicates to your network you are calling a number outside of the country you are currently in. The international calling code is the first set of numbers you dial, and the most common codes for the majority of countries are 00 and 011. We added an example of what it’s like to call India above, the same concept applies to other destinations. Check out our International Calling Tip Sheet to learn more about dialing a number abroad.
What are Country Codes?
The country code is a unique sequence of numbers that identifies the home country of the number you’re calling. Dialing codes for countries are specific to each country, and you dial the country phone code after you’ve dialed the international calling code. We’ve attached our full list of country calling codes below this article.
Are International Calling Codes Different from Country Codes?
Yes, these codes are very different. Countries can share international calling codes but cannot share country codes. You will need both codes for your international call to go through: the destination-specific country code to pinpoint where you’re making a call to as well as the international calling code to locate where you’re making a call from. Once you input these two codes, you’re ready to dial your friend’s local number!

If the number includes an area code, include that too.
When to use the + sign
On most modern smartphones, you can substitute the international calling code by dialing “+.” However, be aware that this may only work for calling mobile phones. You may still need to dial the full international calling code if you’re calling via landline. Check out our step-by-step walkthrough on How to Make International Calls for more on dialing internationally from the U.S.
Let’s Recap
International calling lets you stay in touch with loved ones abroad. You’ll dial the international calling code first, indicating you are calling a number outside of the country you’re in. Next, you’ll dial the country code, which is specific to the destination you want to reach. Finally, you enter the local phone number with an area code, if needed.
